EAST MEETS WEST

CONCEPT

Creative ideas emerge from the meeting of East and West,
and the interaction of different cultures

Digital Garage has created DG717 Incubation Center in San Francisco, the birthplace of cutting-edge technologies and of many businesses that have grown into leading web services used across the globe, as a hub for information sharing for new technologies and new entrepreneurs, and as a place to provide various resources after starting business in the US.

The concept phrase for this Center is "East meets West," in the hope of becoming a hub for cultural interaction between various nations and peoples. It is to become a modern center where East can meet West once again, based on the history of human development with East-West migrations.

When I accepted this prime opportunity to work on filmmaking set to music of Mr. Ryuichi Sakamoto, who I deeply admire and respect, I began working on a plan to convey the concept of "East meets West", and the business operations of the Digital Garage Group. However, as soon as I received the demo music from Sakamoto, all my plans evaporated. It was a work of spatial art conceived in the image of beauty and mysticism. Because conventional ideas did not match the quality of the music, I wasn't immediately able to connect it to its worldview. However, the idea and visual image came together with my inspiration, as always. "Filming the Silk Road from the sky." I expressed the theme of "East meets West" by featuring the flow of how the peoples of the East and the West came together, in a sequence suggesting the history of mankind spurred by riding horses. This idea grew in strength with the ending that Sakamoto created. The project turned out to be an enjoyable one, with the film created to adapt to the soundtrack. I believe Digital Garage will continue to be a presence that witnesses the birth of new things maintaining peace without bloodshed even in interactions of disparate elements, as they have done up until now. I look forward to DG717 incubating more ideas that will benefit the world.
